March 2024 Report
Below is the Oregon City School District reporting on the Strategic Plan efforts as of March 7th, 2024.
Instructional Excellence
Goal 1: By 2027, each and every student will achieve at high levels as measured by multiple means.
Kinder-9th Teams have studied STAR assessments measuring literacy to examine both student growth and areas for instructional focus.
Professional Learning Teams have been trained in using this data to plan academic interventions.
Mid year Winter STAR assessments show 4% overall student growth in literacy achievement since the Fall.
9th Grade Success Teams are monitoring grade reports and credit attainment regularly to identify students that need support.
Survey for student perception of access and support for instructional excellence has been created and will be given April or early May
The Instructional Leadership Team, which is composed of 80 people from all 11 schools, met in January (and will meet one more time in March) to continue learning and planning for building level improvement related to Professional Learning Communities, MTSS, and 5 Ds.
All K-12 staff in each school had professional development supporting:
literacy
math instruction
preparing for statewide testing
implementing interventions
attendance improvement
Classified Staff had continuing professional development in supporting positive student behavior and small group literacy instruction.
Optional professional development has continued and is now up to between 3-4 options a month. Teachers are compensated for their time. To this point, we have had 179 teachers participate. All sessions have been recorded and posted on the internal website as a resource for staff. Recent topics include:
accessing library resources
classroom management
mathematics, writing
academic language
health curriculum requirements
Our Educational Equity Conference on February 9th saw over 700 staff participants (including teachers, classified staff, and administration), over 70 presenters (including national and local experts in our own staff), and focused on social emotional learning and supporting each and every student in our schools.
Goal 2: By 2027, we will implement a consistent vision for instructional excellence throughout our district.
CLASS Design Team met twice a month in November, January and February in work groups to lead implementation of 5Ds evaluation tool..
OCEA was awarded an employee wellness grant from OEA. With this grant, a wellness committee for the district will be created, staff will be surveyed to help inform an action plan, and at least one community building activity will be done prior to the end of the school year.
Professional Growth and Evaluation Handbook revisions will be complete and shared by March 8, 2024.
CLASS Design team will share the handbook and 5+D self assessment at the March ILT meeting.
Avid Site Team Leaders and Administrators met with the regional expert to examine progress towards building and district level goals, all of which are aligned purposefully to the Strategic Plan. The team collaborated to self assess their progress so far based on student achievement, growth, habits, and enrollment
Slides and notes are shared by the ILTs within the school teams of 6-8 leaders who then work collaboratively in their building to train staff and provide context and relevance.
Principals had professional development and practiced data collection tools for instructional feedback using the 5Ds and continue to practice in their schools.
Goal 3: By 2027, teaching staff will collaborate using relevant and timely data to meet student instructional needs so that students will meet or exceed grade level standards and expectations.
ILT’s have continued to refine their understanding of the successful characteristics of a PLT, especially focusing on assessment systems at each level.
Teams have reviewed all existing assessments that provide different information that informs decision making for instruction, including selecting formative assessments from their current adopted materials. Building based ILT teams have also focused on data analysis, bringing back protocols for use in building PLTs.
All levels of literacy teachers have been trained in the implementation of literacy assessments and the use of the individual and group reports.
Secondary teachers are receiving additional training on creating small groups for intervention based on this data, and Elementary teachers are continuing to learn about the use of interventions within the adopted curriculum’s materials.
Candice Henkin has been hired as the new Literacy Specialist for our district, and one of her first priorities has been organizing training for every elementary teacher in Amira, our new curriculum for targeted literacy instruction for students in grades K-5. All students will be appropriately placed in Amira before spring break. She will also train teachers on how to use the data to drive instruction.
Literacy Walks with Instructional Coaches, K12 Literacy Specialist, and Admin for all buildings.
Half day cross district professional development for Grades K-2 and 3-5 focused on the early literacy framework and enhancing small group literacy using the Wonder/Maravillas curriculum.
